Auditions

January 27
CSP Dance Studio
5505 Osuna Rd NE
Albuquerque, NM 87109

Welcome to the 2010 season of Vertical Expressions. We are thrilled to have Darlene Hansen directing this show. One of the leading casting directors for TV and Movies in New Mexico.

This audition will be held at CSP dance studio. The studio is located at 5505 Osuna Rd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87109 (NOTE: This is the intersection of Osuna and San Mateo, not the part where one become the other.) We will be holding the audition starting at 6pm, Wednesday, January 27, 2010. Please be on time. We have no current plans for further auditions.

You do not need to prepare a monologue, song or dancing. The acting portion will be a cold read from the script and the dance portion will involve 3 choreographed routines. We are looking to see how well you pick up choreography, not perfection.

The show is currently penciled in at the Kimo for May 21st, 22nd and a matinee on the 23rd.

Casting will take place the week following the audition and you will be contacted via phone to inform you of our decision either way.

We are looking for men and women for this audition, but especially MEN!

Please pass this information on to others who may want to audition.

OMG: A Bawdy Burlesque lol!

November 07
African-American Performing Arts Center. Corner of San Pedro and Copper on the Expo New Mexico Fairgrounds.

This was a Burlesque/vaudeville show in the modern times. The show featured lots of live (several musicians and vocalists) and recorded music, entertaining skits, and great dancing. Hosted by April Ball and Jack Borders, it was a classy, yet sultry fun time. While "OMG: A Bawdy Burlesque lol" involved no nudity, it didcontain some sexual implications.

DJ Madie’s 30th Anniversary Show

July 05
Albuquerque Social Club
DJ Madie is a local DJ who has been working for the local community for 30 years. She has always loved watching Jason Deuter dancing, so when the Albuquerque Social Club put on a show for her, Vertical Expressions was asked to perform. This was the show that brought us Robin Lubarsky. With only 5 days to prepare, we arranged some special moves, and the rest of the dance was completely improvised. During the rehearsals, we created a new move. In the video, you see Robin wrap her legs around Jason, then flip over backwards. The first time this was done, it was an accident. The intent was to lift Robin up, but during one of the rehearsals, we didn't quite make it. To prevent her from falling, she wrapped her legs around Jason and she was saved from a potentially terrible tumble. We took the accident and worked with it, creating the move you see.

Albuqueruque Gay Pride 2008

June 14
New Mexico State Fairgrounds
For Gay Pride, we choreographed Michael Buble's "Sway" with Jason Deuter leading and Michael Naldonado following. Michael is a seasoned professional ballet dancer with no ballroom experience. He learned to Rumba in 2 weeks flat. One comment he made was on the difficulty of doing the Lead and Follow work, as ballet has nothing of the sort. The major error was in the heat of the day. We had been out in the heat of the day, with a performance at 5:30. Both dancers were already suffering mild heat exhaustion by the time of the performance.

Plans for 2010

We have been discussing several ideas for next year. In 2010 we intend to produce at least 4 productions.

In May of '10, we'll kick off the year with our Vaudeville vs Burlesque show with some of the old acts, plus some fresh ones. This is a scripted show with a story line and becomes a form of musical theater. Take Moulin Rouge and mix it with Oliver Twist, add a little West Side Story and set in a Noises Off setting where there is a war between two comedy troops, and you have an evening of drama, laughter and more.

Next we are looking at the options for a play. We are planning for a comedy to be performed in April or May.

Then in October we hope to be presenting The Rocky Horror Show.

To finish the year off, we will be presenting a light drama in December.

We have already begun production meetings for this next season and are excited to bring on new members to our company.
